Re: In search of a balanced view

Helen of course you have to dial, address Turkey, etc. when contacting your friends in the North. This is because NTRC cannot develop an internationally recognized phone extention and mail address because the Greek Cypriot Republic of Cyprus blocks this. Would you rather Turkish Cypriots were unable to get mail or receive calls? This is precisely what your president Papadopoulos wants. TC have only one door towards the rest of the world: Turkey. Had the Republic of Cyprus not been so adamant to isolate them into submission, Turkey would not play such a major role in the North. You know this extremely well.
BTW. Settlers and Turkish army do not outnumber Turkish Cypriots.

So what is your excuse regarding the erasure of everything Greek in the north? The defacing of churches, and cemeteries, and above all the renaming of all places and streets to Turkish. In the South the mosques have not been looted, the cemeteries are still there and looked after, the Turkish street names are as they were.

Re: In search of a balanced view

Petros, there is a lot of anger at the role of your church in inciting anti-muslim attitudes. The sentiments for enosis were championed by the church for many decades, they incited greek cypriots to attack turkish cypriots. The Greek Orthodox Church became the symbol of intolerence for TC, so some of its markers - churches, cemeteries, etc., were attacked by people not educated enough to know that there are better ways to protest. Please also keep in mind that for 3 decades TC were ruled by a nationalist dictator - Dentkash. They did get rid of him finally, but now it looks like you have one ruling the south and alienating the rest of the world.

The street name signs in the whole of Cyprus used to be in 3 languages before 63: greek, turkish and english. Your government removed them throughout the south and replaced them leaving out turkish language from public sight. There is only one such, pre 1963, street sign left - it is in the old town in Nicosia. I saw it recently.

Dear Beta,
I do not want to contradict you but the numbers speak louder than words.

... There are about 120,000 of them (Turkish army and settlers) compared to about 70,000 Turkish Cypriots...

Re: In search of a balanced view

Where does all these discussion lead ? why was the m6 cancelled ?
it all comes down to the inner conflict of this country.
Politicians dont want to reach out the hand to the turkish neighbours. They dont want to share their power with the turkish minority. And they just realised the impact that m6 could have on peoples opinions. papadoupolous fought in EOKA for the Enosis with greece, he dont want to accept a turkish side to life. the cancellation of the m6 shows that politics in cyprus are not ready yet to forgive and look to the future. There could be a lenghy discussion about the build up of this socitey and why the events happend as they did. It would all lead to the conclusion that cyprus was and is not ready yet for a project like this with or without diplomatic skills of the curators. I hope Cyprus learned an important lesson and is ready when the chance like this will come again in the future.
